The Betts House's first exhibit of 2010 opens Fine Arts Fund Sampler Weekend. We’ll be open with free admission (although donations are ALWAYS appreciated!) The opening reception for Home Work will be Saturday, February 20, 5-8 pm and the exhibit will be on view at The Betts House through April 8, 2010.

HOME WORK is an exhibit of new work by the design studio VisuaLingual, featuring throw pillows, table runners, ceramics, and limited-edition prints inspired by the historic architecture of Cincinnati. HOME WORK offers a new perspective on the ornamentation and embellishments found on many downtown and Over-the-Rhine buildings. By removing the design elements from their architectural setting and placing them on functional objects and prints, VisuaLingual shifts the focus to the artistic merit of each unique detail. VisuaLingual (www.visualingual.org) is the award-winning multidisciplinary design studio of Maya Drozdz and Michael Stout, which creates original place-centric products and prints, and also collaborates with cultural agencies on design commissions. Based in Over-the-Rhine, the studio's work focuses primarily on the built environment in and around Cincinnati.

Prohibition Resistance Tour 2010

March 06 and March 07

Explore Cincinnati's Brewing Heritage!

Prohibition Resistance Tour 2010
March 6-7, 2010
Explore Cincinnati's rich brewing heritage, both above and below ground.
Each tour will start at Bockfest Hall, where participants will learn about the Brewery District and then travel to the Clyffside Brewery (also known as the Mohawk, Sohn, and Red Top Brewery). Here, a multimedia presentation will take participants back to 1888, when Cincinnati was one of the brewing centers of the country and beer was the backbone of Over-the-Rhine. We'll continue our tour past the remaining breweries on Brewer's Boulevard with such storied names such as Jackson, Moerlein, Lafayette, and Hudepohl. The next stop will be the Kauffman Brewery, where we'll hear about Cincinnati's beer barons and explore the massive subterranean lagering cellars under the building. A brief walk past the typical working class Italianate tenements will explore the typical Over-the-Rhine resident's life in 1888. The final stop will be the Crown Brewery (also known as the Schmidt Brothers Brewery). Here we'll learn how Prohibition closed most of the Cincinnati breweries and dealt a devastating blow to Over-the-Rhine. This tour will include a visit to the recently rediscovered and reopened lagering cellars and tunnel underneath McMicken Avenue, which have been sealed off for 50 years and never before opened to the public.

US CENSUS

Every Counts Today: April 01

Be Counted!

The U.S. Census will be conducted on April 1st, 2010. It’s a one day snap shot of everyone living in the U.S. on that day, including non-citizens. The count is conducted once every ten years.

Mayor Mark Mallory has formed a Complete Count Committee to ensure that the count for Cincinnati will be as accurate as possible. He believes that Cincinnati was undercounted by 46K in the last census and estimates that the city has lost $104 million of census-based, allocated funds over the past ten years. An accurate count also affects the city’s image since indices that measure crime and poverty use the census population as a base.

The only way to be included in the census is to complete and return the census form (it’s available in six different languages) that will be sent out next year. The U.S. Census Bureau does not extract data from any other database. It also treats any returned information in complete confidence.

The Complete Count Committee is organizing a number of ways to get the word out to the entire population that they need to complete the census. It’s also developing ways to help people who need it and to follow up with non-responders. More information about the Committee activities and general census information will be sent out in the future. You can also check out the website, www.cincinnaticounts.org for more specifics. In the meantime, please tell everyone to get counted.
