Volunteers Sought for National Baptist Convention, Sept. 8-11
THANK YOU! The Cincinnati USA CVB wishes to thank the Downtown Residents Council for volunteering so many hours at the information booth on Fountain Square during the recent NAACP convention. The city and CVB received wonderful comments from the attendees about how welcoming Cincinnati is.
WELCOME! The CVB is currently preparing for the National Baptist Convention, which will take place at Duke Energy Convention Center, Sept. 8-12.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Once again the CVB will have a tent on Fountain Square to act as an information booth during the convention. We are once again seeking volunteers to staff the booth, and invite the Downtown Residents Council to participate.
DATES/TIMES: The booth will be open Sept. 8 – 11 from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m.; and there will be three shifts: 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.; 1-3 p.m. and 3-6 p.m. Ideally, we would like to have two or three volunteers during each shift.
OUR GUESTS: Founded in 1886, the National Baptist Convention USA, Inc. is the oldest and largest African American religious convention in the country with an estimated membership of 7.5 million. Our city is expecting more than 20,000 attendees. Most visitors are in their 50s and 60s. The convention does not have many planned meal functions, so we expect attendees to be out and about enjoying Downtown and looking for dining establishments. Our visitors are occupying 16 hotels in the area; eight in Cincinnati and eight in Northern Kentucky.

Extended By Popular Demand!
Thursday nights’ “Salsa on the Square” has been one of the most popular concerts as part of this summer’s PNC Fountain Square Summer Music Series. Between the music and the free dance lessons, people from all over the region have spent Thursday nights from June through August strutting their stuff on the Square.
Thanks to the generous sponsorship of Gain detergent, a Procter & Gamble brand, “Salsa on the Square” is being extended two extra weeks.
Zumba! will provide live music on Thursday Sept. 4 from 7-9 p.m. And a still-to-be-determined band will headline another Salsa night on Tuesday Sept. 16 from 7-9 p.m. Dance instructors will also be on the Square to demonstrate the Latin moves that make Salsa night so much fun.

Artist, Activist & Citizen Collaboration
Cincinnati PARK[ing] Day announces a call to citizens for the second annual "Cincinnati PARK[ing]" to be held Sept. 19, 2008 in parking spaces around Cincinnati. This is a one-day, global event in which artists, activists, and citizens collaborate to temporarily transform parking spots into public parks and alternative public spaces. Parking spaces show the fundamental elements of a good outdoor public space and may include seating, shade, and a place to watch people, exchange information, and view scenery. Each parking spot can be transformed into a park, playground, puppet show, or whatever you like.
This event is open to the public. There is no entry fee. There are no commissions. We're looking to hear from interested parties before Sept. 5, 2008 so that we can start lining up parking spaces, organizing materials and advising the community of our ambitious intentions.
