October 14, 2008 Member Meeting

Welcome and Introductions

Conrad called the meeting to order at 6pm. Self-introductions followed.

CPD Update: Captain Theege District One

  • New Segway patrols are up and rolling downtown. Look for one!
    Sgt Dave D'Amico DSU. Crime Statistics
  • 9% drop in part I crimes over same period last year
  • 6% drop in part II crimes over same period last year
    Upcoming events (no problems expected), but will have CPD and/or DSU present:
  • Disney on Ice; Friday night Lights football at Paul Brown Stadium; Bridges charity walk at 8am on 18th; Bengals game on Sunday the 19th.
    Officer Doug Meek with Neighborhood liaison office for DT and Mt Adams.

Cincinnati Fire Department

  • CFD was represented by Rick Marshall from Engine #3 at 9th & Broadway.
  • Nothing to report at this time
  • Always available for questions
  • November 2nd reminder to change batteries in smoke detectors

Motion to approve September minutes: Chris Wiedeman, 2nd by Lynn Smith. Motion to approve the minutes was passed unanimously

Special Guest Presenters:

Sandy Straub with DCI
  • Services that DCI offers include
    • Safe & Clean (run sectorgroups devoted to bringing business owners from each section of downtown together to ensure all issues are handled quickly)
    • Marketing
    • Small Business & Stakeholder services
  • Upcoming vote in 2009 for 2010 Special Improvement District. DCI is soliciting input from all residents regarding what services they would like.
Chris Sterwerf from VIP (Volunteers in Policing):
  • Introduced Chief Streicher's concept of 360 degrees in which a visitor to downtown has only turn in a 360 degree circle to spot either a police officer, a VIP representative, or a DCI downtown ambassador
  • VIP's mission is to provide a smiling face and a helpful hand for visitors whether from the suburbs or from out of town.
  • Training is available and more volunteers are needed
  • Materials were distributed, and additional info is available on DRC website
OLD/REGULAR BUSINESS: COMMITTEE UPDATES

Social Committee: (provided by Conrad Thiede)

  • 10/15 at Carteaux and Leslie 6pm to 8pm
  • 11/6 at Havana Martini Club 6pm to 8pm
  • Arnold's is the new venue for post-meeting revelry this month

Treasurer: (provided by Chris Smith)
$185 in deposits; $697.84 in expenditures; and $5,267.89 current account balance. As always, Chris is available for any more specific questions. /p>

Green Committee: (provided by David Siders)
Mayor's recycling challenge update DRC has met the 5 ton challenge issues by the Mayor! DRC will receive a fabulous cash prize to use for neighborhood beautification. Thanks David!

Clean & Safe: (provided by Conrad Thiede)
Liquor license request for transfer for Bootsy Collins' new restaurant. No objections were made, license was approved. Conrad reviewed the licensing process for the group. Input from DRC'ers is always welcome. DRC always makes an effort to reach out to any establishments in question as a good neighbor gesture.

Cynthia Felson provided an update on a meeting between residents of her building and BlackFinn & Lodge Bar regarding noise levels. Meeting was very helpful, got cooperation from both businesses. Regular meetings were agreed to. DRC is available to help with other situations like this.

Chico Lockhart with DCI is available as outreach worker to help with housing issues for the homeless

ANNOUNCEMENTS

The following announcements were noted:

  • 3 new businesses on Vine in Gateway Quarter Mahatma, Switch, and hair salon. Also look for a Segway scooter store coming soon
  • Macy's Shirley Hoffman is in charge of visitor and guest relations. She is a liason with visitors, weekend tourists. Will be a special guest at November DRC meeting
  • David Siders: Library is hosting Art Museum women painters
  • Saturday Nov 1st, Books by the Banks. 105 authors, big event at Duke Energy Center
  • CMT (Cincinnati Music Theatre) presents HMS Pinafore. 3 downtowners in the show. November 7-15
  • Betts house exhibit moving to Park + Vine starting November 30th.
  • This weekend Saturday from 11 to 12 is class on genealogy at Public Library
