Welcome and Introductions

Andy Chirch, DRC President, presided over the meeting this evening; minutes from the January 12, 2010 meeting were accepted by Mr. Koon, 2nd by Rick Dieringer.

Cincinnati Police Department Update:

  • The police substation/visitor's center on Fountain Square is officially open - the space was generously donated by Fifth Third Bank. Volunteers are welcome to give their time to manning the desk
  • Crime is DOWN over 36% in the Central Business District; stats can be found on the CPD website
  • Upcoming Events: The Home & Garden Show and Wine Tasting Festival is taking place at the Convention Center; Ringling Brothers Circus is in town; St. Patrick's Day Parade this coming Saturday; April 5th Reds Opening Day Parade
  • www.citizenobserver.com is a useful tool for following information on crimes

Cincinnati Fire Department:

  • Captain Kirby urged us to stop by your local firehouse for a visit; he reminded us that in high rise buildings, know your way to the stairway and/or exit doors; exit the building immediately upon hearing the fire alarm; candles and kitchens are the biggest cause of fires; The Firefighters Memorial Park is being planned and contributions are being accepted @ www.cincinnatifirefightersmemorialpark.com; CPR can be learned on-line for free @ www.cprtoday.com - it could save a life

Guests:
Craig Vogel, Associate Dean DAAP - Live Well Collaborative, co-founded with Proctor & Gamble's support; developed to respond to the needs of the aging consumer 50 years and older; they are looking at products & services that might be helpful; lifestyle and health care needs; studying the light rail/streetcar issue here in Cincinnati with a concentration on the needs and concerns of the older population; UC students will be in touch with members of the DRC to speak about addressing their needs; forums will be held in future dates
Robert Bond, Director of Operations & Business Partners - Passage Lounge, new establishment located @ 6th & Main; the business partners live in Cincinnati; anticipated opening May '10; networking establishment designed as a meeting place for customers; striving to make Passage a destination; limited food (tapas menu) and drink will be offered; happy hour will be available (4-8); days of operation Wed.-Sat; serving high end products with level of service to match; capacity will be 250-300; music levels will be kept low; parking available at the 580 Building, Izzy's, and valet service available

OLD/REGULAR BUSINESS: COMMITTEE UPDATES

Treasurer's Report: Chris Smith
The month began with a balance of $3,600.58; $44.48 in checks were written; Deposits of $105.00 were made, and the ending Balance is $3661.10

Membership Committee: Casey Gilmore and Alison Kamine
The process of transferring responsibilities from Casey to Alison has begun.

Clean, Green and Safe Committee: David Siders, Paul Westendorf & Chris Wiedeman
The Dog Park project has received a substantial contribution from Proctor & Gamble.

Events Committee: Linda Phillips and Marty McGlinchey
Meet up at Palomino's immediately after the meeting; March social event will be on March 17th @ 6:00; meet in front of Potbelly's; join in the spirit of St. Patty's Day, come decorated with a Shamrock and have a chance of winning one of three prizes that will be awarded to the best "Shamrocks"!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

The following announcements were noted:

  • Andy Chirch, Casey Gilmore, Linda Phillips, and Paul Westendorf will be leaving the DRC Board at the April 2010 Annual Meeting
  • The 2010 slate of offices will include: Lynne Smith, Ben Wissel, Susan Lennard, Craig Hudson, Julie Carpenter, and Chris Wiedeman
  • The DRC voted to support 3CDC and the development of the former Metropole Apartment building
  • Macy's Music Festival will be held on July 30th & 31st at Paul Brown Stadium
  • The Velvet Room (formally Bang) new downtown nightclub; open Fri.-Sun. nights only (25-40 age bracket); a police detail will be on duty; 2:15 a.m. closing time; sound system wattage has been reduced; police will aggressively enforce a 2:30 a.m. curfew; valet parking will be made available for more efficient retrieval of cars
  • Jazzercise; 7 day access pass available; two locations - Christ Church Cathedral and Emanuel Community Center www.jazzercinnati.com
  • Queen City Gothic author J.T. Townsend will be speaking at the Main Public Library
